Support technology development by buying new, even if it’s a slightly out of date cheaper model. The record and play heads are the main thing to be concerned about on a video camera, they can get worn out. If you are interested in buying second hand, find out how much shooting the camera has already done? Why is it being sold? I recommend buying new, with in your price range, not someone else’s disposable item! (more…)

Buying A New Video Camera?
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009Personal Specifications
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009Look at the specifications, lens type, how many chips, HD or tape, think about what you need it for, what are you going to be doing with the video, effects are a bonus, not to be over used. If it’s for uploading to the internet then you can happily use a DVD standard format. Think about if you need a still photo function, is it better to have a still photo camera with video or a video camera with a still photo function? (more…)
Brands
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009I think the only brand to buy is Canon, believe me they are by far the most superior on price and technical performance, even in their cheapest models, than any other camera brand that I know of and I have had experience with most brands. They have also got the longest experience in the camera manufacturing business, as they were one of the first makers of cameras. They give three years guarantee. (more…)
Size Matters
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009I always use high end domestic cameras, the smaller compact models that do the same as a big shoulder held cameras, because my filming style is more discreet. On professional filming jobs however, the clients does not want to see you using a home camera, it makes them think that they could do the job themselves, they want to see you with something that looks a bit tricky, they are paying you to do something they cannot do themselves, that’s why people use the big ones but not just for the illusion. You can always get round this by using a chunky tripod and attaching a filming light to the body of the camera for the larger effect if you only have a small one!
Price Ranges
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009See what is available at around the 1000€ to1500€ plus price range. For the extra money you spend, you will also be buying a quality sturdy machine, a reliable work horse, so you will not need to buy a secondary camera as back up. If you still do want to buy a back up camera or domestic camera then maybe just look at the 350€ price range, look at the Canon models with an ‘i’ at the end of their model number, which indicates they have special features to aid editing, like DV in/out. Also buy extra long life batteries, I never go anywhere without my six hour battery. Also a battery car charger is a good thing to have. I trust this information has been helpful.
